Seasonal Theme Updates: What They Do to Daily Use
2026-10-28
We shipped four seasonal theme packs in 2026 and tracked what happened to daily use afterward. The short version: a seasonal codex theme lifts activity on the day it lands, the lift is gone by day nine, and only the packs that change the accent instead of the whole palette keep any of it. The numbers below come from 3,100 installs across the four drops, with activity measured against each person's own previous seven-day average.
What happened on drop day
- Install day: daily use up 31% against the previous seven-day average
- Strongest drop was the autumn pack, at 44% over baseline
- Weakest was the New Year pack, at 18%, and it landed in a holiday week
- Two thirds of that lift came from people who had not opened the editor in a week
That last number is the one I keep coming back to. A seasonal pack does not make people work longer. It gives people who drifted away a reason to open the editor again, and that is a return visit rather than a habit change. The difference matters if you were about to read the lift as growth.
How long the lift lasts
- Days one to three: activity holds between 20% and 31% over baseline
- Days four to nine: it decays to roughly 8%
- Day ten onward: no measurable gap from the pre-drop average
- The two accent-only packs decayed slowest, losing half their lift in 11 days instead of 6
Which packs kept any of it
Two of the four packs left something behind and two did not. The ones that held changed the accent, the selection color and the panel background, and left the syntax colors alone. The ones that vanished recoloured everything, and people switched back inside a week.
- Accent-only packs: 23% of installers still using it at 30 days
- Full recolour packs: 7% still using it at 30 days
- Packs that touched syntax colors drew four times the complaints of accent-only packs
What this means for a pack of your own
If you build a seasonal pack for yourself, change three things and stop. Accent, selection, panel. Touching the syntax colors is where people bail, and it makes code harder to read rather than easier. The color editing walkthrough is at /en/guides/customize.
- Swap the accent first, since it carries most of the seasonal feel
- Leave syntax colors on whatever preset you already read well
- Keep your contrast, because a dark pack is not automatically a low-contrast one
The part we got wrong
We timed the New Year pack for the holiday week and it was our worst drop of the year. People were not at their desks. The autumn pack went out on an ordinary Tuesday and beat it by 26 points. If you are planning a seasonal drop, the calendar does more of the work than the art does.
FAQ
Do seasonal Codex themes change how much you use the editor?
For about nine days they do. Use rises roughly 31% on the day a pack lands, then decays back to baseline. After that the gap is too small to measure.
Which kind of seasonal theme do people keep?
Accent-only packs. 23% of installers were still using one after 30 days, against 7% for packs that recoloured everything including the syntax colors.
When should a seasonal theme go out for the best result?
On a normal working day. Our New Year pack landed during a holiday week and was the weakest of the four, 26 points behind a pack that shipped on an ordinary Tuesday.
