Industry Theme Preferences: What Finance, Tech and Design Pick

2026-10-27

We split theme usage by the industry field on the account, and the three biggest groups do not pick anything like the same thing. Finance leans cool grey with contrast turned up, design pushes saturation until somebody in the room objects, and tech sits between them. The numbers below come from 1,900 active accounts grouped by that field.

What each industry actually picks

  • Finance: cool grey backgrounds, 62% on a dark base, contrast at 7:1 or higher
  • Tech: dark base at 71%, accent colors spread across the whole wheel
  • Design: light base at 48%, the highest average saturation of the three
  • Shared habit: every group keeps one high-contrast syntax preset

One thing surprised me. The industry gaps are real, but they are smaller than the gaps between teams inside the same industry. Two finance teams resemble each other more than a finance team resembles a design team. That sounds obvious once it is written down, and I did not expect it from the data.

Finance: contrast before color

Finance is the most conservative group we have. Cool grey, dark base, and contrast numbers that hold up on a cheap panel in a bright room. The reason is not taste. Half of these people read figures on screen for eight hours, and a low-contrast red is a genuine problem when it marks a loss.

  • 62% use a dark base, against 66% across all accounts
  • Average contrast ratio 8.4:1, the highest of the three groups
  • Accent colors cluster in blue and slate, 71% combined
  • Warm colors show up as error states rather than accents

Tech: the widest spread and the loudest arguments

Tech accounts use the full color wheel and argue about it the most. They are also the group most likely to switch themes more than once a month, which lines up with the switching numbers in the retention report.

  • 71% on a dark base, the highest of the three
  • Accent colors spread evenly, no single family above 30%
  • 31% switch themes at least once a month
  • Custom palettes are 26% of usage, well above the 19% average

Design: light, saturated, and willing to argue

Design is the only group where light beats dark and the only one where saturation goes up instead of down. Half of them also keep a separate high-contrast preset for review sessions, which I think is the most sensible habit anywhere in this data.

  • 48% use a light base, the only group above 40%
  • Average saturation is 1.6 times the finance figure
  • 52% keep a second preset just for screen reviews
  • Purple and magenta accents together make up 34%

Stealing from the other two

If you like what another industry does, take the habit rather than the palette. Borrowing finance's contrast check costs nothing and works everywhere. Borrowing design's saturation on a dark base tends to end in a theme you cannot read in a bright room. The color editing walkthrough is at /en/guides/customize.

  • Run the contrast check even when the color looks fine to you
  • Keep a second preset for screen sharing, whatever industry you are in
  • Saturation is the dial to turn carefully, not the accent

FAQ

Which industry uses dark Codex themes the most?

Tech, at 71% on a dark base. Finance is close behind at 62%, while design is the only group where light wins, at 48%.

Why do finance teams keep contrast so high?

Long stretches of reading figures. An average of 8.4:1 holds up on a cheap panel in a bright room, and a low-contrast red is a problem when it marks a loss.

Should I copy a theme from another industry?

Take the habit, not the palette. Finance's contrast check and design's second review preset both transfer. Design's saturation does not survive a dark base.
