Two monitors are never the same color

The same Codex theme often looks like two different themes on two panels side by side. The cause is not the theme, it is the hardware. IPS and VA render black differently, factory color temperatures differ, and a twenty percent brightness gap is enough to make a dark theme look washed out on one side and solid black on the other.

So the first step in a multi-monitor setup is not picking a theme. It is getting both screens onto a similar baseline.

Align the baseline before you argue about taste

• Set brightness and contrast to the same level on both screens and compare using a greyscale ramp, not by eye.
• Match color temperature. One cool screen next to one warm screen exaggerates every difference in a dark theme.
• If one screen is primary, put it directly in front and use the other as support, rather than treating both as primary.

Three mistakes on multi-monitor setups

• Maxing out contrast. Two screens of pure black with pure white text deepen the shadows in the room and make long sessions harder.
• Mixing dark and light themes. Every time your eye moves, it has to readjust.
• Putting a saturated palette on the side screen. The secondary screen gets glanced at, and saturation keeps pulling attention back to it.

One configuration that works

Put a low-contrast dark theme on the primary screen for long coding sessions. Put the light variant of the same theme, or a flatter version of it, on the secondary screen for terminals, logs and documentation. Keep the accent color identical on both, so moving your eyes does not feel like changing rooms.
